Ascension Day marks the day that Jesus ascended to heaven following his crucifixion and resurrection, according to Christian belief. It is celebrated in many countries including CanadaGermanyNetherlands and the United States.

What happens in France?
The Ascension Day is taken as a public holiday in France.
It is officially celebrated on a Thursday on the 40th day of Easter.  In countries where it is a public holiday, it is usually a free day for many workers. Many people take a long weekend off because the day falls on a Thursday.
The public life is generally quiet on Ascension Day. Post offices, banks, stores and other businesses are closed. However, big stores in Paris like at the airport, railway or even along the major highways may be open. Public transport services may run on weekend.
