Hailing from Barcelona, Sónar Hong Kong is the city's edition of the festival, celebrating music, creativity and technology since 1994. This year, Sónar Hong Kong will open its doors to the public at the Hong Kong Science Park on Saturday, March 17, 2018. Other than music, festival goers in Hong Kong can expect to take part in workshops, master classes and talks which promote the "best and brightest innovations in creative technology", otherwise known as the Sónar +D programme. Combing through the jam-packed schedule, here are some of our picks and a look at some of the participating French artists in this year's festival.
Jacques, the French electro trailblazer
After being expelled from the “G-spot” - the artistic squat he had opened with friends in an old railway station of the train to Paris - Jacques moved into the old battery factories in St-Ouen, the perpetually balanced desire of imperfect harmony. He finds beauty hidden in the sound of everyday objects and brings them to stage for a recorded performance. A bicycle wheel, electric fan, or even a watering hose turn into beats that get you dancing. Coupled with the keyboard and guitar, Jacques’ sets are just as fun to watch as they are to listen.
Laurent Garnier, French electronic legend
Laurent Garnier is an artist who never stands still. He is tireless in his enthusiasm and is always bursting with new ideas and projects. As well as the demands of his DJ-ing and his radio shows, Laurent Garnier has also evolved into a well-respected music producer across the globe. Aside from his albums and singles, Laurent Garnier is also a composer for the cinema, television and theatre arts. He wrote the music for the films SDF Go Home and Qu’Allah Bénisse La France, for the documentary Play, for the animated film Globi and the Stolen Shadows. In 2010, he made the music for the French television show Groland. For theatre, Laurent Garnier has composed the music for contemporary dance choreographers Angelin Preljocaj and Marie-Claude Pietragalla. In 2015 he also produced the album “Scarifications” for the French rapper Abd Al Malik. After 30 years devoted to music, Laurent has been made Chévalier de la Légion d ́Honneur in 2017.
Sunsiaré, eclectic and incredible

Sunsiaré is a Hong Kong based Musician / DJ / Producer, behind the Fragrant Harbour label and its sub-label “Homesick”. A passionate and versatile artist, Sunsiaré isn’t restrained by a single genre of music and endlessly try to gather all his influences into a recognisable musical identity.
WM Records

After a few years in Hong Kong, these six young French men grew tired of living the same sanitized night life and decided to initiate their own parties. Each of them were coming from different backgrounds but all thrown into the love of House Music since they were kids. They quickly knew how to feel the kicks and the bass straight out of Berlin Techno and Paris’ House Scene. Playing separately for several events, WM Records now assembles their creativity and energy to trigger their new record Where is your Mum. WM is this unseen vitality and fervor of throwing dynamic house beats, pushing moody techno tracks and distilling brutal acid house. Between pure techno, banging Chicago, tracks old and new of the past twenty-five years, the six boys from WM Records communicate their message with an apparent sincerity and warmth.
Open Reel Ensemble, a group which took home the Best Performance Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival

Two-time winners at the Japan Media Arts Festival, Ei Wada’s Open Reel Ensemble uses 1970s-style reel-to-reel tape decks connected to computer controllers and a weird and wonderful variety of outmoded electrical appliances, delivering a live musical performance that is as strange as it is compelling. Their intriguing tone and composition won high acclaim and the ensemble landed the musical director of ISSEY MIYAKE’s shows at the Paris Fashion Week three seasons in a row. Their live performances enjoy critical acclaim in Sónar (in Barcelona, Spain) and Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), and many more.
Sophia - Talks @ Sónar + D

Having made her debut at the globally acclaimed South by Southwest in March 2016, Sophia is much more than an ordinary robot. She's recently made a citizen of Saudi Arabia and is created by the Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics. Sophia displays realistic emotional responses and ultra-lifelike facial expressions, blurring the line between AI and human consciousness. Don't miss this fascinating talk.

Tree - Virtual Reality - Sónar+D

Created by the award-winning New Reality Company (Milica Zec and Winslow Turner) from the US, this VR project explores the theme of what life would be like as a tree in the Amazon. Expanding the immersive experience through additional sensory inputs, Tree allows festivalgoers to live through the entire lifecycle, from seedling to fully grown tree to its ultimate fate. Part of the official selection at the Sundance and Tribeca film festivals.
